Once in the water and after a brief Captains meeting we were off for a beautiful cruise out a relatively unspoiled river which flows into the Gulf. \r\n\r\nA Short distance from the dock the development soon stops and except for a few scattered island cottages accessible only by water there is nothing except olde Florida coastal wilderness. \r\n\r\nThe Jersey Skiffs enjoyed this curvy run following the channel markers and were soon out of sight. We all met up out in the Gulf where some of the skiffs went approximately 5 miles out to the last marker. Most of us stopped before we got out that far because it was beginning to get a little rough. \r\n\r\nA unique sight was the “Bait Lady” in her little pontoon boat with a hugh shrimp mounted on the top of a hard top floating out on the flats selling everything a fisherman could ever want. \r\n\r\nReturning to the mouth of the river we spotted a large pod of dolphin playing in the shallow water around our boats. They appear almost human as they look you in the eye as if to say, ‘I KNOW WHAT YOU ARE THINKING”. \r\n\r\nWe returned to the upper river and back into the settled area, passing Riverside Villas Resort where we were staying and up a little further to the Seagrass Waterside Restaurant. We all docked and had a wonderful lunch by the water on comfortable umbrella shaded tables. \r\n\r\nBy mid afternoon we were on our way toward the spring where we enjoyed the cool clear waters of Homosassa Springs the remainder if the afternoon. We were treated to an unusual sight while swimming near our rafted up boats as a dolphin, perhaps one of those we saw earlier many miles out in the Gulf of Mexico, had herded up a school of mullet and was feeding as he chased them up in shallow water only a few feet from us. We observed this sight for several minutes and when the dolphin was full he swam close by us and headed back out toward the open water.\r\n\r\nBy late afternoon we were schriveled up pretty good from the water so we raised anchors amid thumbs up from all the plastic boaters who had cooed over our boats for the duration of our swim. We arrived back at Riverside Villas, and after circling Monkey Island and watching the monkies feed, we moored at our assigned spaces and headed for cocktail hour on wood tables at waterside and swimming in the pool. \r\n\r\nShortly before dark many of us boarded our boats for a sunset cruise to Margaritagrill, our chosen dining spot for dinner whiel others drove over. The food was excellent, but the hugh margaritas, nearly half a gallon were the biggest hit. This pretty much describes our event, with the exception of Wednesday’s wind, most days were mild with temperatures starting in the 60\'s and reaching over 80\'s by Saturday On Thursday the cross Florida boats arrived from Clewiston and after checking-in at the Ramada Inn, some rode back to retrieve their cars and trailers while others settled in. Most of the ACBS Winter Meeting members had already arrived and were gathering in the lobby making plans for drinks and dinner. Since there were too many of us to all go to one restaurant, we broke into groups...Italians, French, Fishmongers, etc., and went off to those restaurants in smaller groups. Friday was the first day of the winter meeting of the ACBS, which was held on the second floor of the hotel, with a view of the Ft. Myers Yacht Basin and the Caloosahatchee River. While the meeting was supposed to end earlier, it lasted until 5pm. Several of the boats waiting to give rides gave up and went for a late cruise on their own. At 6 pm the Sunnyland Chapter sponsored a cocktail party with hot food and a cash bar upstairs in the Paramount room overlooking the river. Friday night’s dinner was again \"peoples\" choice with many returning to the same restaurant while others tried different restaurants because there were more than 20+ places to eat within a five-block walk from the Ramada. Saturday was by far one of the best \"winter days\" we have had in a long time, with some ACBS members just having left snow and ice behind on Thursday, only to enjoy the mid 80\'s, bright sun, and a light wind. We couldn\'t have asked for a better day. The draw of the water this time was just too great and the meeting adjourned on time and everyone was on the docks by 10:30am ready to go. With Whoopie, Glory Days, Puppy Love, Drift Away, Wave Toucher, Otay, ,Runaround Sue, Peggy Sue, Odyssey, More Jazz, Top Cat, and Bob Breidert\'s 45\' motor yacht, we were able to give everyone boat rides to Will Stout\'s Cape Harbour Marina and Rumrunners Restaurant. At the docks was Frank Muto, the harbour master, who greeted us and got all the boats tied-up. After a short welcome-in gathering by Will Stout, we all went to the restaurant, where we had a whole room all set aside for our group. Following a short “welcoming” speech by Gerald Dake, Will Stout and his staff, we were treated to great drinks and fantastic food. The only thing that could top that was a tour of an original/restored wood \"yacht\" over in the marine yacht basin.\r\nThe 70\' boat was custom built many years ago for the man who invented \"kitty litter\" and was original except for the lower deck in which the layout was redone in walnut. Capt. Wally gave all a tour of this fine yacht. He has owned wood yachts before and was, at the time of his retirement, the captain of the largest super tanker in the world. He now maintains this yacht for overseas owners who use it a couple of weeks a year. By 3:30 many were ready to do more boating; with light wind, 5-10 mph winds and temperatures around 82 degrees, who could blame anyone. While most eased back to the docks, some ventured out towards Sanibel and Pine Islands for a tour of the waterways. Others were treated to a wine reception on the \"Iva W\", a converted oyster dredger/freighter built in 1929 and docked at the downtown marina.Sunnyland would like to take this opportunity to thank Art Wolf and Marilee Ives for hosting this event on behalf of our members and also ACBS. Saturday night dinner was set-up in the Ramada because that night was also \"bike night\" in Fort Myers, where the downtown streets were blocked-off and hundreds of street bikes were put on display. Several thousand people had gathered to see the bikes. Some ACBS members decided to brave the crowds while most remained at the Ramada Inn Sunday brought another beautiful day with most having to drive back home but a few were lucky to boat back up-the river to Clewiston through fresh water and to their cars/trailers.
